Music provides the heartbeat to life at Blackheath Prep. The Music Department has 10 highly experienced peripatetic staff and almost all instruments are taught.

We have six choirs, two orchestras, a wind band, a jazz band, recorder and flute ensembles and a guitar club. There is also a thriving co-curricular programme and concerts are held regularly throughout the school year.

All children from Nursery to Year 6 receive at least two timetabled Music lessons a week. The Music curriculum is varied and stimulating. The core skills of composition, performance and listening to music are taught via an extensive range of activities.

In Year 2, the children learn the recorder and begin to read from notation. In Years 3 & 4, children participate in the school’s Strings and Wind and Brass Schemes and are given the opportunity to learn an instrument, fully funded by the school. In Years 5 & 6 all children learn Taiko drumming in the spring term.

Almost 80% of our pupils learn one instrument, with many learning more.

The school also has a strong choral tradition and has achieved significant success in local and national competitions, including the Bromley Music Festival and BBC Songs of Praise’s Junior Choir of the Year competition.
