In 2023 we are celebrating our school’s bicentenary marking 200 years of a school on our site. Founded in 1823 by the Reverend Greenlaw, our school was originally a Christian boarding school for boys. In 1996, a new nursery was opened at the school and in 1998 Christ’s College closed its doors and the school became known as Blackheath Preparatory School & Nursery.

Across this year we have a host of exciting events, collaborations and learning planned to celebrate our 200 years in the local community. These celebrations were launched with a special tree planting ceremony and tea party on 31 January, attended by The Worshipful the Mayor of Greenwich, Blackheath Prep’s founding Head, Jenny Wedgeworth and our current Head, Alex Matthews. In May we held a week of learning looking back at the history and events that have taken place over the past 200 years, and our pupils came to school dressed in different fashions representing the eras – see the photos here. We also hosted a wonderful celebratory concert at Blackheath Halls with a superb evening of music and song performances by our talented pupils. On 1 July we threw a party and invited our local community to come and celebrate with us at a fantastic Family Fun Day & Children’s Book Festival, with special guest Michael Rosen. Over 3,500 people attended across the day and what a day we had! See the photos of the day here.
